School of Indigenous Studies

Pre-Medicine and Dentistry program

This intensive, five-week course offered in January and February helps provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with the skills necessary for entry into Medical or Dental School.

Who should apply?

The course is open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You should apply for the Pre-Medicine and Dentistry Program if you:

  • think you might be ready to enter Medicine, Dentistry, Podiatry or Health Sciences immediately after successfully completing this Summer School, or
  • want to find out more about studying Medicine, Dentistry, Podiatry or Health Sciences and how much more academic preparation you need.

If you are already close to being prepared for tertiary study in a science-based area you are likely to benefit most from the course.

You will be selected based on your application and a telephone or personal interview.

Entry to mainstream courses

Assessment for entry into Medicine, Dentistry, Podiatry or Health Sciences will be individual and only partly based on results in the Pre-Medicine and Dentistry Course. A minimum average score of 60 per cent is expected, and other criteria will also be considered.

Following this preparatory course, students may be offered a place in Medicine, Dentistry, Podiatry or Health Sciences as a full-time first year student or entry to the first year of Medicine over two years (in combination with additional preparatory work and/or elective subjects).

Alternatively, students will be offered a place in a Bachelor of Health Science or Bachelor of Science course or the Aboriginal Orientation Course at UWA to help prepare for Medicine or Dentistry the following year.
