The annual Year 12 Seminar is a week-long residential program open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Year 12 who have academic ability and an interest in studying at university level in Perth.
The seminar introduces and promotes the various study options at the universities in the Perth metropolitan area.
It is held at the Point Walter Sport and Recreation Camp in Bicton. All student costs - including travel, meals and accommodation - are sponsored by UWA.
Facilities and resources
All five Perth universities are visited during the week, and students learn about the programs, facilities and resources available from the Aboriginal Centres at each university campus:
- Curtin University - the visit to the Bentley Campus includes the Centre for Aboriginal Studies, School of Nursing and Midwifery and the School of Physiotherapy.
- Edith Cowan University - Kurongkurl Katitjin showcases its new building at the Mt Lawley Campus as well as the Sport and Recreation Centre and Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) courses.
- Murdoch University - after being welcomed at the Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre, where students are provided with an insight into their courses such as multimedia, tour the Professional Education Program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in veterinary science (PEPA).
- Notre Dame University - a tour of the historic buildings of Fremantle is part of the excursion to Notre Dame University. You will also find out what is offered at the Broome Campus.
- University of Western Australia - a friendly and homely atmosphere is provided at UWA by the staff and students at Shenton House, as well as a campus tour which includes activities at Human Movement, visits to lecture theatres, the Sport and Recreation Centre and Winthrop Hall.
The program includes learning seminars, a self-esteem workshop and social and cultural activities which encourage students to meet each other, network and discuss their future.
