School of Indigenous Studies

Student facilities

The School of Indigenous Studies provides a resource centre for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students on campus, including all orientation, undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The centre has a resource library and study room containing most first-year textbooks and a range of books and magazines relating to Aboriginal issues, as well as course outlines, past exam papers and faculty handbooks.

The student resource centre also fosters social interaction on campus and enables staff, students and the wider Aboriginal community to develop a sense of Aboriginal identity and community at UWA.

Other services and facilites at the centre include:

Study areas and tute rooms

Shenton House provides students with a number of areas in which to study. The area next to room G.12 is the main study area.

There are additional rooms around campus for students to book for tutoring including SS 2.14 (all times), Old Pharmacology G.09 (sometimes) and the library in Shenton House (occasionally). Please see the School Receptionist or Student Services staff if you would like to make use of these rooms as they can only be booked for a maximum of two hours at a time.

Also available for study and/or tutoring are carrels 228 and 229 in the Reid Library - see staff at the checkout counter for a key if they are locked. There are also plenty of study areas in any of the libraries on campus.

If you feel you need tutoring please see Gabe Garratt immediately to arrange a tutor.

Computer room

You will need to log in to use the computers at Shenton House each time you want to access the web or use email - see the School Receptionist to be issued with your new password.

Each student has a quota for web usage and printing so it is very important to also log out when you have finished working on the computers as other students could be using up your quota.

Viewing of non-course material and sites is strictly prohibited. Internet usage is monitored, and action may be taken and internet use restricted if anyone is caught viewing such sites.

For any computer-related problems please see the School Receptionist or call the Helpdesk on extension 7888.

After hours access

Students have access to the study room G.12 and the computer room after hours, but you need to let the School Receptionist (extension 3428) know before 3.30pm each day or Friday for the weekend.

This is so the receptionist can let Security know which students will still be in the building after hours for study purposes. Please make sure you have some sort of identification on you. If your name is not listed, security will escort you out.

For your security and safety it is imperative that all doors to the building are kept locked after hours (after 5pm and on weekends). Please note that the front door of the building will not shut properly unless pulled shut.

Common room

Room G.02 is the common room for both staff and students. It is a place where anyone can come to take time out of their schedule of work or study and relax. It's a good place to catch up with other students as well as staff at anytime.

Staff will usually start their morning with a cuppa in the common room just after 9am, so if you're in early feel free to join them for a yarn.

Throughout the year, the common room is also used for various functions and meetings, and some students also find it useful to study in, although it is first and foremost a common room to kick back in and therefore it cannot be booked as a quiet tute or study room.

When in the common room during the day it is important to try to keep noise to a minimum as sound travels very easily throughout the building, especially to the reception / front office just across the hallway.

Kitchen facilities

Staff and students at Shenton House are lucky enough to have access to full kitchen facilities. Located at the rear of Shenton House, the kitchen has a large fridge (please label your food), microwave, dishwasher, toaster, pie warmer and a kettle, amongst other knick-knacks. If there is anything else you feel is needed in the kitchen, please let staff know.

Feel free to use any of these items. WASAC members can also use the tea and coffee, which is readily available, although we do ask that you make a donation every now and then by buying a small carton of milk.

It is imperative that you wipe all benches down once you have finished zapping your food or making your coffee as ants can be a real problem, especially if scraps are left lying around. Who knows what else roams around the benches after hours? Please think of others and clean up after yourself.

There is a quota per semester for students. Should your quota run out please see the School Receptionist in the front office to reset your quota at the cost of a ream of paper.

If you have any problems with the photocopier please see the School Receptionist.

Student telephone

All students have access to the student telephone, which is situated in the computer room. Only local calls are to be made on this phone - if you need to make a mobile or long-distance call, please see the School Receptionist or Student Services staff.

Remember, for any calls that are internal, only the last four digits need to be dialled. That is if you need to call our reception from any phone on campus, you only need to dial 3428 without dialling 6488 first.
