I am Jaru - my mother’s family are from Turkey Creek.
At the end of year 12, I had decided that I would like to pursue a career in medicine, unfortunately my marks were not enough to gain direct entry. I thought that there was no chance of pursuing a university education, but that year I was contacted by the School of Indigenous Studies at UWA and was informed of the Aboriginal Orientation program to gain entry into an undergraduate course. After being accepted into the Orientation Course and completing it, I enrolled in the Aboriginal Pre-Medicine /Pre-Dentistry Course offered by the Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health (CAMDH) and the next year completed first year in the Bachelor of Science. The following year, I transferred into the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
In 2010 I successfully completed my Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and am currently working as a Doctor at Royal Perth Hospital. I have been enjoying working as an intern, having completed terms in Geriatric medicine and Emergency Medicine at Bunbury Regional Hospital.
With my future career as a doctor, I have a keen interest in Dermatology, and would like to pursue a career in this field, with an interest in running rural clinics in the future.
